When the Location Accuracy text turns red with a yellow background, this indicates that the GPS satellite signals are not being received properly. Therefore your position may be off. Poor reception may also cause high errors in speed and course measurements.
The GPS-measured course accuracy gets better at higher speeds. When nearly stopped, the course direction is undefined.
056 ±37° HDG
When the Heading Accuracy text is red or the heading seems incorrect, recalibrate the internal compass to improve the heading accuracy. Imagine arrows sticking out of all 4 sides and the front and back of your device. Rotate the device in several different ways so that each of the 6 arrows will at some time be aimed at every area on an imaginary sphere surrounding you. If this does not improve the accuracy, then move farther away from all electrical devices or metal, and repeat. The actual heading error will be greater than the displayed accuracy if near magnetic material such as steel, or your device is not aligned with the boat centerline.
In the Chart Area
The direction of the Course Indicator shows Course Over Ground (COG). The length of the Course Indicator is proportional to the square root of Speed Over Ground (SOG).
At very slow speeds, a gray Compass Heading Indicator is shown instead of the blue Course Indicator, because GPS Course measurements are not accurate at very slow speeds.
If the Compass Heading Indicator turns red or seems to be pointing in the wrong direction, recalibrate the internal compass to improve the heading accuracy. Go through the normal compass calibration movements even if you don’t see the prompt to do so. Imagine arrows sticking out of all 4 sides and the front and back of your device. Rotate the device in several different ways so that each of the 6 arrows will at some time be aimed at every area on an imaginary sphere surrounding you. If this does not change the Compass Heading Indicator to gray, then move farther away from all other electrical devices and metal, and repeat. The displayed Heading Indicator will only be correct if the internal compass is calibrated and your iOS device is physically aligned with the boat and away from magnetic materials.

When two adjacent charts partially overlap or you see Selected chart (✓) is offscreen , to bring the back chart to the front, double-tap it to select it, or tap its name on the Chart List screen.
Only charts which use the same map projection will stitch together. Most NZ RNC Marine charts use the Mercator map projection. Any Mercator chart will stitch to any other Mercator chart that either touches it or overlaps it, as long as the scales of the two charts are not too different. NZ Mariner Transverse Mercator (TM) charts will not stitch.
iSailGPS NZ uses the characteristics of the selected main chart to pick a useful visible grouping. The chart you select is always on top and fully visible. iSailGPS NZ may add charts to and remove charts from the group as you pan around and zoom. If you pan too far away from the selected chart, the other charts will disappear from the screen. So select one of the visible charts by double-tapping it after you pan to a new location.
If you zoom out too far, the display update speed may get very slow. NZ RNC Marine charts are huge images (up to 71 megapixels, 34 x an HDTV picture). Displaying the zoomed-out image of many of these stitched together can take many seconds. We haven’t prevented you from doing this, as sometimes the zoomed-out display can be very useful. But most of the time, keep the zoom level such that you can read the water depth numbers on the charts for quick interactions. If you need more of an overview, select a chart with a larger scale. On older, slower, and smaller RAM memory devices, you may need to turn off Stitch Charts to avoid too-slow display updating and out-of-memory problems with very large charts.

Calculated Rise and Set times are approximate. The exact observed times depend on the relative elevation of the surrounding topography and the temperature of the air in the light path.
Pay attention to the displayed time zone. The displayed time zone is more accurate for some locations when an Internet connection is available. If necessary, correct the times shown to the desired time zone. DST means that Daylight Saving Time is known to be in effect for that location on that date.
For the moon illumination percentage, ↑ indicates a waxing phase, and ↓ indicates a waning phase.
Less than 50% indicates a crescent phase, while greater than 50% indicates a gibbous phase.
The magnetic declination is only available for your current location. If you don't see the magnetic declination, then tap Done, perform the compass calibration, and try again.

Route waypoint names are shown in Italics to distinguish them from regular waypoints.
Each waypoint entry in the table shows the great circle distance and bearing from the previous waypoint and the total distance along the route. When the distance is long enough that the bearing changes along the path, the “at” bearing is the bearing leaving the previous waypoint, and the “to” bearing is the bearing arriving at the new waypoint.
The route screen shows newly added or edited waypoints in red.
If a route waypoint is identical to a regular waypoint, then they are linked so that only one of them shows on the chart. To break the link:
- Edit the route waypoint or
- Edit the regular waypoint when the route containing the route waypoint IS NOT selected on the Routes screen.
To edit a waypoint without breaking the link:
- Edit the regular waypoint when the route containing the route waypoint IS selected on the Routes screen.
Deleting one of the linked waypoints will not delete the other.

To Download Charts with Multiple Sections
* Each paper chart has a number, such as nz5124, assigned by LINZ to the chart.
Many paper charts have multiple charts printed on one piece of paper. For example there may be one chart section showing an entire bay, and a second chart section showing a close-up of a harbor.
For digital charts, these individual chart sections are indicated by a two digit section number added to the end of the chart number. The main chart section is indicated by 01 at the end, for example nz512401. The close-up sections are indicated by 02, 03, etc.
On paper, the close-up chart sections are often shown as insets. In iSailGPS NZ, each chart section is shown individually so that each can have its location properly georeferenced.
To manually download separately each individual section of a multi-section chart:
- Tap the Chart List tab.
- Tap + .
- Tap Place Name or Chart Name .
- Enter only the main paper chart number under Search for the Coordinates of .
For example enter nz5124, not nz512401.
- Tap Search on the keyboard.
- In addition to returning location coordinates, under Search for the Coordinates of iSailGPS NZ will return the full chart number for the last available chart section. For example enter nz5124, tap Search , and you will see nz512403. The 03 on the end means that chart nz5124 has three chart sections.
- To download all three sections individually, download charts nz512403, nz512402 and nz512401.
Enter the full chart number under Search for the Coordinates of .
Tap Search on the keyboard.

Charts Available within iSailGPS NZ:
NZ Marine raster charts are available for all of the coasts of New Zealand and the surrounding islands. Lake Taupo and Lake Wakatipu are also included.

LINZ has declared that no more updates will be made after 7 December 2023. If you require more recently updated charts then you must not use iSailGPS NZ, but should switch to another app which supports the newest NZ ENC charts.

GPX files are the preferred file type for exchanging waypoints, routes and tracks with other applications and other users, and for storing iSailGPS NZ data outside the app.
KML files can contain many things besides waypoints, paths, and tracks. When importing a KML file, all of these other things are completely ignored. The waypoints are imported as waypoints. The paths and tracks are imported as routes.
TCX files are Training Center files. Read-only support is provided for single route import from fitness apps. The .tcx file name is used as the route name.
